Designing minimally segregating granular mixtures for gravity‐driven surface flows

چکیده

In dense flowing bidisperse particle mixtures varying in size or density alone, smaller particles sink (percolation-driven) and lighter rise (buoyancy-driven). But when species differ from each other both density, percolation buoyancy can either enhance (large/light small/heavy) oppose (large/heavy small/light) other. the latter case, a local equilibrium exist which two mechanisms balance remain mixed: this allows design of minimally segregating by specifying ratio, mixture concentration. Using DEM simulations, we show that specified methodology relatively well-mixed heap tumbler flows. Furthermore, prepared fully segregated state mix over time eventually reach nearly uniform Tumbler experiments with large steel small glass validate simulations potential for designing mixtures.

Surface flows of granular mixtures III . Canonical model

We present the generalization of the minimal model for surface flows of granular mixtures, proposed by Boutreux and de Gennes [ The minimal model was valid for grains differing only in their surface properties. The present model also takes into account differences in the size of the grains. We apply the model to study segregation in two-dimensional silos of mixtures of grains differing in size ...

Stress partition and microstructure in size-segregating granular flows.

When a granular mixture involving grains of different sizes is shaken, sheared, mixed, or left to flow, grains tend to separate by sizes in a process known as size segregation. In this study, we explore the size segregation mechanism in granular chute flows in terms of the pressure distribution and granular microstructure. Therefore, two-dimensional discrete numerical simulations of bidisperse ...

Rheology of surface granular flows

Surface granular flow, comprising granular material flowing on the surface of a heap of the same material, occurs in several industrial and natural systems. The rheology of such flow is investigated by means of measurements of velocity and number density profiles in a quasi-two-dimensional rotating cylinder, half-filled with a model granular material mono-size spherical stainless steel particle...

Surface Flows of Granular Mixtures: I. General Principles and Minimal Model

We discuss theoretically trie filling of a (two-dimensional) silo when a mixture of partiales is poured at the ceuter. Our basic tool is a coupled set of equations (for the Iocal density of rolling species, and for the profile) proposed by Bouchaud et ai. We extend this to. a pair of species, including various processes: amplification, capture, and exchange of rolling grains. Using the simplest...

Surface Granular Flows: Two Related Examples

Granular surface flows are common in industrial practice and natural systems, however, theoretical description of such flows is at present incomplete. Two prototype systems involving surface flow are compared: heap formation by pouring at a point and rotating cylinders. Continuum models for analysis of these flows are reviewed, and experimental results for quasi-2D systems are presented. Experi...
